We live in a world that is less and less about ‘Googling' and more and more about ‘asking an AI.' Whether that is a tool like ChatGPT providing answers to your question, Google’s AI Overview giving you an overview of the available web pages, or a tool like Perplexity fetching and synthesizing content based on your questions, generative engines are effectively changing the way we discover information.
I’ll look at what GEO is, why it is important, how generative engines work, what you can start to think about today to be prepared, and what the future holds.
What Is GEO?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the process of optimizing content and digital presence to improve visibility in an AI-driven search experience. Instead of simply appearing on search engine results pages (SERPs), GEO is the process of altering what content is chosen, synthesized, and cited by large language models (LLMs).
A foundational paper published in 2023 defines GEO as a dynamic, black-box optimization strategy for improving the way generative engines reference content.
A study in research (2025) more directly considers how GEO is used to "dominate AI search" across a range of domains.
GEO is also referred to in a variety of different ways—AI SEO, LLM Optimization, or "Answer Engine Optimization," to name a few, but the underlying idea is the same: establish that your content has more than visibility.
In summary
We are facing a turning point. The way we discover information online is changing from link-based discovery to generative-answer consumption. In this new world, visibility means more than just ranking; it means being cited. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is your entry point into that future.
The brands that are able to be early adopters into the GEO space are not only as likely or less likely to survive their domain of expertise as others, but they will also shape how AI sees their space for years. The time to get started is now. Experiment, measure, and iterate. Don't let your content just be "findable," let it be trusted, used, and shared around the next generation of search
